Would you drink a milkshake through a cocktail straw? Of course not.
Similarly, air vent filters or indoor air filters that are not routinely replaced will become caked in dust, hair and other particles. Then this will disrupt the air flow and tremendously decrease the efficiency of the AC unit. Replacing the vent air filters at a minimum of once every two weeks is beneficial, however, it is our recommendation that it should be replaced as soon as it appears dirty or discolored.
These filters are usually found on the wall or on the ceiling inside your home. Before purchasing your new indoor air filter at your local home improvement store, be sure to check your used vent air filter for the dimensions printed on the side. If those measurements are not visible you can measure the length, the width and the thickness or depth in inches. To remove the grille you will need a flathead or phillips screwdriver. Be sure to have microfiber cloth handy or a hand vacuum to remove the dust from the grille before removing it to access the indoor air filter.
Steps to clean you air filter:
- Start by turning off the air conditioner to ensure safety.
- Locate the filter, usually found behind a grille or cover on the indoor unit.
- Carefully remove the filter, and if it’s reusable (made of foam or metal), gently vacuum or rinse it with lukewarm water. For disposable filters, simply replace them with a new one.
- Allow the filter to dry completely if washed.
- Before reinstalling, make sure it’s free from dirt and debris.
Regular maintenance like this ensures efficient airflow, better indoor air quality, and prolongs the lifespan of your AC system. Remember to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for specific cleaning instructions.
