Our pets are like family to the team here at Optimal Heating & Air, so we wanted to share some tips to let your AC unit and your pets live in harmony. Whether you have a package unit or a split system you can prevent damage to your system with these helpful points.
HVAC package units, or all-in-one systems, are typically located on the roof of your home. Although they are nowhere near your indoor pets, your furry, loveable members of the family still pose a threat to the efficiency of your air conditioning system. Accumulation of pet hair and dander in your ventilation system and air filters will disrupt air flow. One way to prevent this problem is to frequently check your air filters and change them out. See our Homeowner Tip #1 article for more details. Also, brushing or de-shedding your dogs and cats daily will significantly reduce the amount of fur that gets trapped in your HVAC system. Regularly washing your pets will lower the amount of dander you are breathing in; however, we recommend installing an air purification system. HVAC split systems are more vulnerable to exterior damage from pets. Is your hound a leg lifter? Dog urine corrodes the metal of your condenser. This part of your HVAC split system is located outdoors so we recommend blocking your tail-wagging pup’s access with a fence or planting bushes around it. Keep in mind you should allow the outdoor condenser at least 36” of free space around it so as not to disrupt the air flow. Also, make sure to have plenty of chew toys for your teething fido so that wires are not your dog’s only choice.
